Allow EXTRA EXTRA time to get to/thru the airport -- traffic delays, long check-in and security queues all add unexpected delays. Pad the airport's recommendation by at least 1/2 hour (i.e., not 1 hour for domestic flights, but 1.5). Pad it by even more if: (1) this is your first visit to the airport and your unfamiliar with the layout; (2) you need extraordinary customer service (to change tickets/flights, to check in a minor traveling alone, to check special luggage/pets); (3) if you have to return a rental car ( finding return lots AND then getting from the lot to the airport takes longer than you'd think); or (4) if it's the holiday travel time. Go straight to your gate, then you can estimate how far shops, bars, etc, are from the gate. Allow at least 1 hour (maybe more depending on the airport) for connections.
